Face Makeup Skin Skincare Sun

Viva Italia-Rilastil

How many bronzers are too many, and how much should one spend on one? Is the inclusion of ‘skin care benefits’ a deciding factor, or are you swayed by what is being hawked as the latest and greatest? No matter the factors that lead to your purchase, in recent years bronzers have become highly integral to any makeup maven’s cabinet. But this post is not just about bronzer. It is about an Italian brand, and in a greater sense it is about a research institute that created a new category, using the fundamentals of pharmaceutical research as its building block. Dermocosmetics, the intersection of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, are ideally intended to perform at a higher level, especially because the ingredients used are generally nearer to pharmaceutical grade. The company Rilastil, born from the Instituto Ganassini, can trace its seeds to 1870 via Domenico Ganassini, Professor of Chemistry. Mr. Ganassini established the Instituto di Ricerche Biochimiche Ganassini in 1935, where pharmaceutical research was at the heart of its work.

Yet it was not until 1972 that Rilastil formally took shape, with it’s first item focused on maintaining the elasticity of the skin. That product was called Rilastil Stretch Marks. Since then, Rilastil has gone on to offer products for face. body, sun care, camouflage (colour cosmetics) and for men.  Rilastil differentiates itself from other cosmetics and skin care products by its high level of efficacy, the fact that its products are the result of solid pharmaceutical research and that its key tenet is improvement in the elasticity of skin tissue.

My personal experience with Rilastil initially happened about five years ago, via my work at the time. As a result I’ve used their facial cleansers, some moisturisers and body creams. Rilastil also has mascaras in their portfolio, along with a tightly edited set of colour cosmetics which are very high performance. Formulated with vegetable ingredients while also being free of tar and fibers, their mascara is definitely worth a whirl. At $32 USD it is quite spendy, but it will not break your eyelashes off or leave them feeling brittle.

Now to the bronzer, a dual colour product that weighs in at 18 grams/0.63 ounces. When I look at bronzers I usually shudder a little. Some look like chocolate cake batter, while others look like gold bars and silver tinsel were smashed and blended into the formula. Rilastil’s Duo Bronzing Powder is akin to the expensively but simply dressed person, with not a symbol or emblem in sight, yet you can just tell their garments are not cheap. Formulated with UV filters to factor 15, oil free and fragrance free, this bronzer is discreet yet exceedingly effective in lightly shading the face. You decide the depth of application, yet Rilastil’s Duo Bronzing Powder will never make your skin look like you were strategically flame-broiled. It is a very soft powder that does not behave as such. When your brush makes contact with the product it adheres silkily, making it a joy to apply. Not long after you simply look sufficiently enhanced. The lighter of the two shades can be used at the top of the cheekbones and I especially like to slip it on my eyelids when I’m not wearing eye shadow. The result is a brightened eye with undetectable colour. For those with sensitive skin, Rilastil’s Duo Bronzing Powder is unlikely to be an irritant as it is dermatologically and microbiologically tested.

We are all well versed in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Yet, I feel that in the US, the conversation that should be happening in terms of how the skin is treated after sun exposure is less urgent. A good apres-soleil or after sun lotion or cream is exceedingly important, because prolonged sun exposure can dehydrate the skin and in sensitive types, there may even be pain or discomfort as a result. In this instance, Rilastil’s After Sun Lotion is an excellent choice as it re-hydrates the skin, soothes, brings down redness and relieves irritation. It has a very light texture, absorbs easily and leaves no white residue on the skin. Luckily, it can also be used on the face so it is indeed the workhorse you need post sun exposure.

Forgive me as I tend to highlight brands that may not be instantly familiar. Rilastil is indeed another such brand, but it can easily be found at online retailers and at a few bricks and mortar places in the US. It is yet another European brand with a very long history, started by a Professor of Chemistry and has at its heart solid scientific research. Rilastil’s headquarters are in Milan and there are also offices in Barcelona, New York, Lisbon and Berlin. Distribution also spans The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Rilastil’s parent, Instituto Ganassini, is involved in urgent research on cancer treatments while continuing their founding research on the skin. To me, this knowledge is the confidence needed to explore this brand, whether it’s their skin care or colour cosmetics. You’ll indeed get what you’ve paid for.
