This has been the most epic year for big, splashy makeup launches in recent memory, especially since Rihanna has entered the ring with Fenty Beauty. It’s worth repeating and my humble thoughts say that it is set to shift and re-draw the lines of the beauty industry. The number of foundations alone is unprecedented. At forty options from which to choose, along with an array of highlighters in matte and creamy formulas, the Fenty Beauty Match Stix make complexion enhancement fun, straightforward and highly portable.
Coupled with the Fenty Beauty launch, Chanel is also reinforcing its position in the game with their Chanel Fall-Winter 2017 Collection, Travel Diary. Lucia Pica, Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Director, brought the business with this launch, infusing the collection with bold, wearable colours that really can be worn at any time of year. Because I also adore classics, I’ll be sharing a classic, brilliant formula lipstick from Guerlain, Guerlain Rouge G in Gracia 66. If you’d rather not fuss but want a great lipstick formula that doesn’t require lipliner and a ruler, this is the one.
Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Starstruck
I admit it, the morning Fenty Beauty launched I was up almost as early as a baker to survey the entire collection and choose the one, commemorative piece that I wanted. My choice, the Shimmer Skinstick in Starstruck is quite unlike other highlighters I have tried. Fenty Beauty’s website says the Shimmer Skinstick is ‘a longwear, light-as-air shimmer formula to highlight, blush, and bronze’. In real life, it is indeed very light but also quite hard, yet when rubbed onto the skin it simply glides on similarly to a creamier formula. The Shimmer Skinstick in Starstruck is a pink champagne shade that contains quite a bit of mica, but it is formulated so well that it blends out beautifully. Even on more mature skin, the Shimmer Skinstick would work beautifully as a highligter or under the brow bone for pizazz in the evening. When applied in a couple of layers, Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick does not become cakey or clumpy. The Shimmer Skinstick is also fragrance-free and as I said above, highly portable.
The package designer deserves major marks for the convenience and ease of use of this item. In terms of longevity, once you put this on, it remains. In the photograph, I did heavy swatches but for every day, one swipe is plenty. The Shimmer Skinstick also works under your foundation when placed on contour points in need of highlight or under concealer that is placed at the outer-most part of the orbital bone. I like to layer it over concealer, and the very top of the cheekbones. The Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick is one of those products that will take a lifetime to finish because such a tiny bit is needed. This is a multi-use product that can work as a highlighter, it can be layered over cream eyeshdows or it can be worn on its own, with a quick sweep on the eyelid to awaken the eyes. Lastly, I have to mention the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundation and the Pro-Filt’r Primer. My order included very generous samples of both so I was able to actually wear both items a few times. The foundation is impressive and has excellent staying power. My one complaint is that it’s likely better for skin types that naturally retain more moisture. Of course, the primer is formulated to work with the foundation, so together they are quite the long-lasting pair, with the foundation never oxidising on me. Fenty Beauty is quite the phenomenon in terms of its ambitions. I’ll be watching very closely to see where it goes and what it does.
Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow in Noir Pétrole
Chanel’s marketing people succeeded in ensuring that the new longwear eyeshadows were visible this season, in print and on the interwebs. I suppose, with the launch of Gabrielle, an entirely new Chanel fragrance in sixteen years that happened recently, they had to ensure the momentum was there, and it is. Just as a quick aside, all of the fragrances that have emerged from Chanel within the past sixteen years are essentially, flankers. In the world of fragrance, a flanker is a scent that is reinvented over time, where the original formula is edited by adding or removing some ingredients. Packaging and name modifications also happen with flankers, but the ‘blueprint’ or ‘foundation’ remains. An example is the fragrance Coco from Chanel, which was followed by Coco Mademoiselle, then Coco Noir. You may see more about Coco here. After going through several samples of Gabrielle, I’m still undecided as to whether or not I’m smitten. Chanel’s Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow is to me, even easier to use than powder eyeshadows. Indeed, it lays down onto the eyelid in one application, just ensure to work quickly. The colour saturation is superb and the formula is perfectly mastered to allow for fluid, even, multi-layering. Worn as an eyeliner, it never smudges and lasts for hours. In the pot, Noir Pétrole appears dense and dark, but a light hand makes it suitable for daytime wear as well. Noir Pétrole is an expert blend of colours including brown, black, grey etc.
It is a shade that is several things in one, simply see the swatches and you can tell me what you see. For brown eyes, Noir Pétrole will bring them forward and make them sparkle, it’s such a delight to wear. The eyeshadows have also been formulated to be layered on top of one another, so with eight new shades from which to choose, customisation is encouraged. The package also includes a small brush that I may use eventually. I’ve been using my Da Vinci Eye 41930 brush for the eyelid and a flat brush for the bottom lash line and it works a treat. If you need a single shade eyeshadow that will last throughout the day without budging, and especially if you need a neutral shade that you can swipe on in a single layer with one (clean) fingertip, Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow is worth your inquiry. With a roster of shades ranging from neutral to intense, it’s a top choice and the pot will last a very long time.
Guerlain Rouge G Guerlain in Gracia 66
It’s rare that I actually go to beauty counters anymore because online is so much easier. However, I did gander by one day and of course, my restraint was nil. To say that I’ve always been fascinated by Guerlain does not capture the extent of my fixation. If I remember correctly, I started my blog with a Guerlain post. The history of the brand is epic, gilded, industry-changing and actually very long (circa1828). But back to Gracia 66, it was what I picked up from the counter that day, after swatching every single lipstick until I swatched this one. I swiped it on my hand again and again, riveted, enthralled, and about five minutes after, the sale was completed. Guerlain has mastered lipstick formulas, arguably more so than numerous brands both old and new. The elegant, innovative packaging, also adds to its allure. This lipstick is housed in a stunning, (paperweight) heavy, silver case that includes a mirror. The Rouge G formula includes hyaluronic acid spheres, ruby powder and mango butter that contributes to it being an exceedingly comfortable lipstick. Despite the fact that the formula is so emollient, it lasts quite a while on the lips, and even holds its own through beverages and food.
Gracia is that shade that can be swiped on without a thought, like a balm. With my skin tone it works as a ‘neutral’ shade, otherwise, it can be worn from desk, to dinner, to late night, on the school run, to the beach or poolside and on and on. If ever there were a perfect lipstick shade, Gracia 66 is the ultimate contender. I’ve seen several descriptions for this shade but what I see is a brownish pink that swipes one way on the hand but then goes on to do something magical on the lips. So, depending on the natural colour of your lips, its behaviour will vary only in the shade it becomes when you put it on. Otherwise, in terms of feel, wear and the gorgeous scent that is almost as complex as a fragrance, this is a lovely thing to use and to have. The only downside to this lipstick is what you’ll see when you complete your transaction, whether online or in person.
So there it is, three new toys to consider for your makeup bag. Choose one or all three and let me know how you get on.
