After eyeing up the holiday beauty collections so far this season, I narrowed it down to two must-haves for your nails and lips. First, a deep gorgeous plum nail shade from Dior and a stunning, hydrating red lipstick from Chanel. Dior’s Holiday collection, another win from Dior’s Creative and Image Director Peter Philips, is inspired by the radiance of jewels, always a brilliant choice for holiday and for the colder months. While Chanel’s Holiday lipstick collection comes in four shades and takes some of its inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel’s signature lip colour which was red, and her belief in rouge pour la vie or ‘red for life.’
Dior Precious Rocks Collection Holiday 2017 Nail Lacquer in Amethyst
Of the four nail lacquers in this limited edition collection, I was most drawn to Amethyst. Plus if you’ve seen the collection, I bet you’d agree it’s the most compelling one. Amethyst is officially described by Dior as a dark plum. The application is smooth, even and it’s possible to get away with one coat as long as you use a good topcoat. I applied two coats and afterwards, I was slightly concerned that it was too dark. But once the lacquer dried completely and I applied topcoat, that’s when I really saw the beauty of the shade. In natural light, the brilliance of the shade really comes through, while in regular artificial indoor light the colour appears less luminous and deeper than it actually is.
Dry Time and How Long Before it Chips
I would not necessarily describe this as a quick dry lacquer, yet within about five minutes my nails were dry enough to pick up the telephone and use the computer. However, because nail polish dries in layers, it is so much more advisable to give as much extra time as you can muster so that it dries completely. Plus, the extra dry time helps to maximise the longevity of your manicure. Five days passed before I saw the first little chip. In total, I was able to wear this for seven days with chips that were tiny enough to get away with. I type for several hours each day and some nail lacquers begin to recede from the top of the nail as a result. Happily, Dior’s nail lacquer did not do that. Around the fifth day, I noticed the colour begin to lose some of its shine as well.
Dior Precious Rocks Collection Holiday 2017 Nail Lacquer Takeaways
Beautiful, bell-shaped glass bottle topped by a gold-handled brush. The actual brush is slightly rounded to make going into the corners of your nails easier. Plus, the brush handle, which is the gold top of the bottle, has grooves in it. Therefore, picking up the brush feels very comfortable because your fingertips have an easier grip making it a breeze to apply your lacquer. Amethyst can dress-up a casual outfit or give added dimension to an evening look, especially if it’s a very dressy one.
Chanel Collection Libre 2017 Numéros Rouges-No.1 Lipstick (Rouge Allure Velvet Intense Formula)
For Holiday 2017, Chanel has trotted out a stunning and sophisticated collection that includes an eyeshadow palette, nail lacquers, a cheek colour, an eye pencil and of course lipstick. To me, the standouts from the holiday collection are the limited edition quartet of red lipstick shades suitable for various skin tones and in two formulas, Rouge Allure Luminous Velvet Matte and Rouge Allure Velvet Intense. I was quite excited when I first saw the collection. My only other Chanel red lipstick is Pirate, a red that is a true classic and can be worn anywhere. I swatched each shade of the new collection in-store and instantly fell in love with No.1.
Just Another Red Lipstick?
Hardly, as this particular red has a beautiful sheen to it that reminds me of my favourite decade (see the about page):). It is luminous, satiny, comfortable to wear and an absolute pleasure to apply. Added to that, No.1 has a hint of fragrance that is not at all off-putting. It can be applied directly from the tube and the wear time, which is about five hours, is increased when you use it with a lipliner.
Will it make it to dessert?
Not entirely, but enough of it will still be there when you go to touch up. With very subtle hints of pink, this is one of the most perfect reds I’ve used in quite some time. Fitting actually, as Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer, Lucia Pica, expressed her intention for these limited edition lipsticks by saying “I want to have the red lipstick that Chanel has chosen for me,”. And so, her intention was to offer four shade variations of red with the potential to suit any skin tone. Chanel Numéros Rouges No. 1 Lipstick comes in a stunning red case that is one of the reasons it is a standout in this year’s batch of holiday collections. I’d bet a tiny part of the farm on my hunch that these lipsticks will become collector’s items.
