The Play By Sephora Beauty Box Review

If you’re looking for travel minis, easy beauty gifts, house-guest treats or a wallet-friendly way to try out some makeup or skincare, a Play By Sephora Box is the way forward. I figured this out while searching for travel minis online and was a bit taken aback by the cost of individual minis. So before the products are used up, I wanted to share what I scored.

There are two ways to try out these boxes. You can either get a subscription at 10USD per month or you may simply go onto Sephora’s website and purchase a box. Each Play By Sephora Box also has a theme, so I chose a few of them and ended up with bits of skincare including masks, lip balms, eye patches, hair products, some makeup items and even fragrance samples.

Also inside every box is a card for 50 bonus Beauty Insider points that can be redeemed in-store or online. One thing to know about the card is that if when it’s expired upon arrival, Sephora will honour the card for thirty days past the expiry.

Of course, I didn’t photograph the items as they arrived in their specific boxes but instead mixed them and made themes so what you’re seeing is the full sum of all of the boxes.

urban decay all nighter

Some of the items that ‘closed the sale’ for me were the Urban Decay All Nighter Spray, Too Faced Cooling Matte Skin Perfecting Primer and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I’ve always wanted to try these plus I need them for hot weather, but I wasn’t keen on paying for the full sizes so look out for a follow-up post on how everything worked out.

I also scored a mini size Glamglow InstaMud 60 Second Pore-Refining Treatment that I’m quite tickled to use as I’ve never used the brand prior to now.

Here are some more items including the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask. Since it came on the scene, I’ve never felt compelled to splash out for it so this size is perfect for a test run.

estee lauder double wear foundation

Enter Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup, a foundation I’ve always been curious about but may be too drying based on much of what I’ve read. I was excited to see this offered but unfortunately, the shade is not right so I’ll be passing it along.

fresh sugar lip balm

Fresh is another brand that I’ve kept at the back of my mind for so long yet I’ve never tried any of their products. Of course, their lip scrub and lip balms always receive rave reviews so this should be a treat.

caudalie moisturizing sorbet

Over the years I’ve tried different things from Caudalie and really appreciate their cleanser and of course, the Beauty Elixir, saver of faces and the spritz to have on the plane. But I also have to suggest their tinted moisturiser, a product I first tried several years ago and absolutely loved. Back then there were three shades, Light, Medium and Dark, but looking around online now, I’m only seeing the first two shades.

In this Play By Sephora Box, they included the Caudalie Vinosource Moisturising Sorbet, which is a natural gel-cream with organic grape water and chamomile. It’s cruelty-free, vegan and safe for sensitive skin.

supergoop sunscreen

I can’t overstate the value of these boxes. Plus, the ability to purchase them at will as opposed to being locked into a subscription is to me the key incentive. There are several boxes available so there’s one for whatever your needs are.

Do pop over and check out last week’s post where I offer some tried and tested (years long usage) bronzer suggestions [here]. And in the next post, I’ll be reviewing the Summer in The City Beauty Kit from Net-a-Porter. So, let me know if you’ve ever tried a Play By Sephora box or if you plan to and I hope this helps.

No worries and you’re welcome Ms. V, happy to offer a different angle xo

  2. I was always in the impression that Sephora Play box is just a subscription and have seen many videos where people were not so much satisfied with them. But this sounds great that we can get one box and several versions are available. This sounds interesting. I will have to check. Thanks for sharing this is helpful when we are looking to try different products. 🙂
