This holiday season, the Byzantine era takes centre stage as the inspiration for Chanel Les Ornements de CHANEL Holiday 2019 Collection. From the imagination and expertise of Lucia Pica, Chanel’s Global Creative Make-up and Colour Director, Gabrielle Chanel’s love of the Byzantine splendour she encountered when travelling to Venice comes to life in the form of a muted, totally sophisticated and wearable collection. Don’t look for overt amounts of glitter and all red everything here, as this collection has the power to be worn long after we crawl through #dryjanuary.
I cherry-picked only two items from the collection because there’s no urgency for me to buy another eyeshadow palette or another highlighter. But the photo below shows you how stunning everything is.
In true Chanel style, a vintage Chanel button inspired the embossing on the eyeshadows and highlighting powder.
So after much thought, I chose one of the six new lipsticks and one of the two new nail lacquers. The lipsticks are at the heart of the collection and believe me, I was quite tempted to get all six but the voice of practicality prevailed………this time.
Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Rouge Spectaculaire
Let’s start with this collection’s lipstick packaging. Each lipstick shade dwells in a sleek black glossy case trimmed with gold lines. Rouge Spectaculaire features velvety smooth, ultra-thin pigments that deliver opaque colour in just one swipe. Even when built up, this lipstick never feels sticky or heavy on the lips. The finish is subtly shiny, velvety and illuminates your face especially when the rest of your makeup is kept to a minimum.
Rouge Spectaculaire is a true red with little hints of blue undertones. It fades a bit after eating or drinking but never completely wears away until it’s removed. Applied over a matching lipliner, the longevity increases.
Miraculously, the lipstick doesn’t strain under an overdose of scent so you needn’t worry if that’s ever stopped you from trying one of Chanel’s cosmetics.
Chanel Le Vernis in Richness
Chanel never disappoints with their nail lacquers and this time, Richness is so many things, I hope I can find the words to capture this beautiful shade.
While it’s certainly a variation of red, it’s not cherry-red or popsicle red, or even fire engine red. Instead, it’s similar to red wine, think a cross between Bordeaux and Cabernet. When I first tried it, I immediately felt it would be a perfect alternative if you’re not terribly keen on deep, black plums similar to Chanel’s cult classic Rouge Noir.
Richness will flatter a variety of skin tones. Featuring a creamy formula and self-levelling properties, even if you’re not a total ace at applying nail lacquer, it dries smoothly. If you do try it, take a moment to stand in direct sunlight and you’re likely to gasp at how stunning the shade is. It’s one of the most unique and covetable red nail lacquers I’ve encountered in quite a while so if it piques your fancy, act fast.
Chanel has presented one of the best Holiday 2019 makeup collections that marries the brand’s history with modern, wearable products that certainly have a life far beyond the season. It’s so easy to cherry-pick or simply treat yourself to one item. All the items are limited edition so don’t hesitate if you want to buy in and I hope this helps.
