Sometimes, I still get the feeling that any chat surrounding SPF/sun protection is not far off being annoying to some people. After all these years and all the information available, it’s still hard to find common agreement when it comes to what type of sun protection we require, whether it’s needed, whether it’s bad for the environment or whether it actually helps to protect our skin or not. There are actually people who think sunscreen is bad for the skin and using it may potentially cause skin cancers. It’s a sentiment I encountered first-hand some years ago while working on a public outreach SPF campaign.
But here’s what we know for sure:
- The sun will accelerate the skin’s ageing process.
- Unprotected sun exposure can indeed lead to skin cancers and skin disorders.
- There are skin damaging particles in the air that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
- Blue light from our mobile telephones and computers are potentially damaging to our skin with sustained exposure.
CHANEL UV ESSENTIEL COMPLETE PROTECTION ANTIOXIDANT ANTI-POLLUTION SUNSCREEN BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 50 REVIEW
To keep things easy, we’ll refer to this as Chanel UV Essentiel Spf 50. With 7.5% octinoxate, 17.1% zinc oxide and 3.8% titanium dioxide as the filters, it’s meant to offer complete skin protection from oxidative stress, UVA and UVB rays and pollution.
Standout ingredients include:
Kalanchoe Pinnata leaf extract: Has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties plus it helps to stimulate and maintain skin hydration.
Licorice Root Extract: This also has numerous uses in skincare products such as in evening out the skin, as an antioxidant and helping to inhibit the development of dark spots.
Who is it for: It’s suitable for all skin types and can be worn alone or with makeup.
Texture: Very light gel-cream
Fragrance: Not fragrance-free but lacks a strong scent
Absorption: Almost instantly
Product size: 1 ounce
Scent: Surprisingly, almost undetectable.
Any Irritation: None to report.
Safe for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: One of the ingredients in this SPF is licorice root so check with your physician or midwife before using.
How To Use: According to chanel.com, they recommend applying it before foundation. That’s also how I apply it plus it may stand in as a primer. It doesn’t bother my other makeup such as powder, highlighter and blush etc.
I have dry skin and when I’ve worn this alone on makeup-free days and without any other skincare products on, the absorption is lightning fast and it leaves my skin looking very even and brighter than usual.
And the best part is that it doesn’t leave a white cast on my deeper skin tone so I’d imagine it wouldn’t be a concern for lighter skin tones. It also gives a mattifying effect so if your skin is on the oilier side you’ll enjoy this sunscreen.
So far, it’s also never caused me to have a breakout or develop random spots and that’s another key reason I feel comfortable recommending this product.
It’s a small container for the price but it has proven to be the best sunscreen I’ve used. The formulation is very elegant and sensorial, it’s without an offensive chemical scent, as I said above it doesn’t leave an odd residue or white/grey cast on my skin and it’s easy to toss into a handbag or luggage. Do share if you’ve tried Chanel UV Essentiel Spf 50 and if you need some fresh ideas for home scents, see The 4 Candles Currently In My Candlelit Corner and I hope this helps.
