Fad or classic? Whether you choose to shop your stash or add new items as we move towards the festive season, here are some classic finds that are sure to fill in any gaps in your collection. Tom Ford just did a massive lipstick launch known as Lips and Girls. It follows on the success of his previous collection Lips and Boys, a series of lipsticks bearing the names of men he admires. In the same vein, the Lips and Girls collection also bear the names of admired women in Mr. Ford’s life. Lips and Girls come in two formulas, sheer and ultra-rich with fifty shades from which to choose. I chose Sasha from the ultra-rich formula family. Sasha is a cool-toned, gorgeous pink-red that is properly hydrating and most importantly, can be layered with other shades in the series.
Tom Ford Lips and Girls in Sasha
One swipe delivers colour that maintains a level of transparency so it can happily be swiped on without much thought. Swiped on a few times and the colour becomes more opaque but not in the way a full matte lippy would. This formula has a beautiful luminosity that would flatter the wearer’s lips no matter the occasion. After a meal, it fades but not entirely. Personally, I prefer to wear this with a liner to pull it together and lengthen wear time. Otherwise, this is a very classic, comfortable lipstick to wear and it’s an excellent candidate for a clutch purse as it will not take up precious space.
Dior Addict Lip Glow
This is my second tube and this time I chose the shade Berry. A bestseller from Dior since it launched around 2015, this balm is perfect on top of another lippy or on its own. Perfect for errands or to refresh your lipstick during the day, this is easily one of the most hydrating formulas out there.
The formula is meant to work with your body’s own alchemy to make lips look like a more hydrated version of themselves. It can be layered for the utmost comfort that never feels gloppy or sticky. On the days my lips are extremely dry, one swipe relieves dryness and instantly my lips feels better. This is quite a score for your handbag and trust me, once you try this classic lip glow, it will be difficult to settle for anything else.
Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Smoke Red
Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Smoke Red is a classic red nail choice. The bottle is elegant, weighty and invokes excitement just by looking at it. But then a funny thing happened. I compared it to my other ultimate red nail lacquer which is Chanel’s Pirate. On the surface, both lacquers look exceedingly similar, although Tom Ford’s is just a tad deeper. Once I compared them on my nails when the lacquer was completely dried, the difference in shades was almost imperceptible until I held my nails directly in natural light and under a lamp. Tom Ford is indeed deeper.
Yet, the major variation is in the formula. Chanel’s is creamier than Tom Ford’s and for me, has better longevity. Still, Tom Ford’s Smoke Red is striking and good for someone who is leery of or hesitant about those deep, oxblood or plum shades so popular during the cooler months. Both colours are close enough that if you alternated both shades on your nails, only someone with keen observation or laser eyes would detect the difference. Nonetheless, I still reach for Tom Ford when I want red, red nails, especially for evening or some other big occasion.
Chanel No. 5 The Body Cream
Either you love Chanel No. 5 the fragrance, or you’re not keen. While my personal preference is No.19, it was hard to resist the Chanel No. 5 Body Cream, as it’s a less intense version of the fragrance. This is also ideal if you want to experience No. 5 in a different way, or alternatively, if you already love No. 5 and want to further enhance the experience of it.
A thick and luxurious cream that comes in a heavy, square frosted glass jar with a small spatula, this melts into the skin superbly. It also works as a perfect precursor to applying your fragrance. Just test first to ensure that the notes of your chosen scent are compatible to the No. 5 body cream. I would recommend this cream for the conclusion of an at-home spa day or as a gift for your mum, sister or best friend who appreciates such gestures. Sure it can be used every day, especially as there’s so much product. But personally, this is my go-to for days when I want to have the whole experience, using the No. 5 soap then the cream, then sealing it all in with fragrance. Otherwise, it’s stunning to see on the top of your dresser or sink but I keep mine stored away in a drawer. It’s a beautiful sensory experience in a jar, a thing to seek out if once in a while, you crave a simple treat at home in the form of a luxury body product.
I hope this has offered some ideas on tried and true items to consider adding to your personal collection. Each item is really very good and has held their position within each brand mentioned for many years now. Whether it’s the cream from Chanel, an accompaniment to a legendary scent that has aged exceedingly well since its introduction in the flapping 20’s. Or Tom Ford’s classic lacquer in Smoke Red, or Dior’s go everywhere, solve everything lip glow, these items are not faddish but have more than proven their worth.
