Today I’m reviewing Guerlain L’Essentiel Natural Glow Foundation which has SPF 20, is meant to last up to 16 hours and is intended to protect skin from pollution. According to Guerlain, this formula contains 97% naturally derived ingredients including white cocoa bean extract along with tara gum and red algae gum. L’Essentiel Natural Glow Foundation contains mineral pigments and yacon juice which is the source of the probiotics in the formula.

Guerlain is renowned for their innovative foundation formulas so this isn’t my first rodeo with the brand. I compared two of their foundation formulas in a [post here], so when I began seeing advertisements for this foundation, I found it compelling enough to seek it out even though it’s yet to become available on this side of the Atlantic.

The first thing setting this foundation apart is its package design. It’s kitted out in a glass bottle with a pump  and the bottle is designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, a multi-medium designer with a highly impressive portfolio including the Café Mollien at Paris’ Louvre Museum. The bottle holds exactly 1 ounce of product making it highly portable, however it become tricky because it’s in a glass bottle that’s perfect for recycling.

Texturally, this is a creamy foundation that is extremely easy to work into the skin. It absorbs quickly enough yet offers time to buff and blend before it dries down depending on how you prefer to apply your foundation. Finger application also works well because it behaves like a facial lotion with a tad bit of extra heft.

It is buildable, offers complete coverage, diffuses imperfections and on my skin it leaves a subtle glow that I am enjoying. Even though I have dry skin, on me the foundation becomes more dewy as time ticks away but it never becomes greasy.

Here are the products I’ve tested the foundation over:

Guerlain Abeille Royale Face Treatment Oil [reviewed here], YSL Forever Youth Liberator Concentrate and Institut Esthederm City Protect In Cellium Spray [reviewed here].

I’ve drummed down the standout aspects of this foundation below:

  • Hydrating formula that would work especially well for drier, dehydrated or combination skin types. If you tend to be oilier, I’d say try a sample first and use a mattifying primer.
  • Does not break apart when layered over other products.
  • Maintains its uniformity during extended wear. (Somehow I felt compelled to clean my stove and oven while testing one day and while it became dewier, it stayed in tact. I simply blotted the dewy spot on my nose and forehead).
  • Buildable and doesn’t cake up.
  • Delivers a skin-like finish while still offering total coverage. In other words, my skin looked better while wearing it but at no pint did the finish look mask-like.
  • Definitely lasts well for more than twelve hours, and it didn’t ‘swallow’ the rest of my makeup such as blush and bronzer.

Guerlain L’Essentiel Natural Glow Foundation comes in 30 shades from fair to deep that are categorised into three undertones: cool (c), neutral (n) and warm (w), so each shade has a letter next to the number. I chose 05N Honey and I did so based on the chart available on Guerlain’s website. While Guerlain has gone to great lengths to break down the shades and included graphics to help customers make the right choice, it’s always best to make that little trip to the counter unless you like to gamble on making the right foundation choice.

Thankfully, there are no offensive scents coming from this foundation although Guerlain states that there are woodsy, musky notes. I had to really go looking for a scent so its almost undetectable.

While it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin, it certainly has more presence than a lighter formula foundation. I can see this being a great formula choice for brides especially or if you like the idea of a foundation that becomes more dewy while wearing. One last note is that I feel that my skin somehow looks better after I’ve removed this foundation. Maybe it’s because according to Guerlain, your skin’s appearance will improve with continued use of this foundation. It’s early days but I do feel that it delivers something to the skin which I suppose is another great selling point. Happy foundation shopping and I hope this helps.
